About Crimson Stone

Who’s behind Crimson Stone?

Hello, it me: Robert Ackley! I’m a game developer professionally by day and hobbyist by night. My commercial projects include Wizard with a Gun and Due Process. I’ve also worked on a variety of free side projects. Currently, I’m developing The BridgeMaster and Dust Dwellers in my spare time under the Crimson Stone label.

Do you make everything yourself?

No, not everything. I am primarily an engineer, so I tend to rely on the talents of others, especially for art and sound. The BridgeMaster is a project that began with friends at a game jam as a nine-person team. Ongoing development continues with help from Soreiany Khong for visual art, Andrew Hermus for programming and level design, and Steven Garcia for music and sound effects. Meanwhile, Dust Dwellers is an independent project in the sense that I am the one developer working on it fully from start to finish. Periodically I seek contributions for its audio and visuals. And of course, for both projects, we’re standing on the shoulders of giants who created the Unity engine, FMOD, and other plugins and tools.

What’s the story of the Crimson Stone?

There once was a dwarf named Rusty Spartanrock with a full red beard, a hearty laugh, and a love of crafting the perfect drink. And at his Tavern, there was none finer than his beloved Red Hot Mead. It flowed from the taps like the molten fire of a blacksmith’s forge, warming the bellies and stirring the souls of all who drank it.

This is the tale of how his Red Hot Mead came to be. You see, even greater than his love of brewing was his deep thirst for adventure. So it was on one fateful day, Rusty set out from his Tavern for a journey to yield new ingredients and inspiration for his craft.

He traveled far and wide, braving the dangers of the wilds and the perils of the road. And it was on this adventure that Rusty came across a small, crimson stone. It was not the most valuable of treasures, to be sure, but there was something about it that caught Rusty’s eye.

For Rusty, the stone seemed to pulse with a faint energy, as if it contained some wondrous unknown power waiting to be unleashed. He felt it resonate with him, tingling his curiosity and sparking his imagination.

And so, with crimson stone in hand, Rusty returned to his Tavern, where he placed it on a shelf above the bar. It was not long after this that he unveiled his finest brew yet: the Red Hot Mead, imbued with the thrill of adventure and the passion that drove Rusty in all he did. And hence the halls of Rusty Spartanrock became a beacon of great cheer, and a place of legend.
